The overall atmosphere of the game was done in a darker tone, that much is obvious. Then, the main story further gives us information on the Devil Gene, which was pretty dark for the series. The picture of Kazuya being thrown into the mouth of a volcano freaked me the fuck out when I seen it for the first time. You then get into the prologues, and boy, it shows a darker side, to the series. First thing that hits you when you start the game is the background music for the prologues of the characters: Fetus, a very creepy song.
I naturally thought that Tekken 4 was a dark game from the time I played it at 6 years old for the first time (Got the game 2002 Christmas :p), and even now, I believe the game is darker.
